Major Learning has dedicated a lifetime of service to both the CLB and
the CLB Regimental Band. Walter joined the CLB in 1939 and was posted
to "F" Company. In 1943, he joined his father Ronald,
also a longtime member, in the ranks of the band. Until quite recently,
Walter's son Don was also a member of the Regimental Band. In fact,
at one point in time all three generations of his family were members
of the band.
Major Learning was appointed Bandmaster in 1972, a position he held
until 1999, when he was appointed Director of Music. During his
tenure as bandmaster, he maintained the traditional high standard of
musical performance. Major Learning was also instrumental in
the introduction of the formal concert dress uniform. Under his
leadership, the CLB Regimental Band has earned recognition at both the
provincial and national levels.
In 1995, to recognize his contribution of volunteer service to both
the CLB and the CLB Regimental Band, Major Learning was awarded the
Order of Canada. In 2000, Major Learning was granted the Freedom of
the City of St. John's. |
